You may be a regular visitor to greenslips.com.au to compare the cheapest prices for a greenslip in NSW. All calculations on greenslips.com.au are anonymous. We have analysed our greenslip calculator visits during 2023 to see what our typical visitor may look like.

When is your registration due?

We found vehicles were slightly more likely to be registered around the end of financial year. This is often when dealers offer attractive deals.

  • 10.7% were due in June .
  • 9.2% were due in May.
  • 9.2% were due in July.

What vehicle do you own?

While new utes are the top 3 sellers in Australia, most calculator visitors own a passenger vehicle:

  • 17% own a ute or light goods vehicle.
  • 3.9% own a motorcycle.

The average age of a vehicle in Australia is 11.7. We found vehicles put into our greenslips calculator were more likely to be 6-12 years old than 0-6 years old. There was a cluster of vehicles manufactured in 2015-2017.

Most vehicles were SUVs or wagons, have an automatic transmission and are driven for personal use:

Owners of motorcycles are more likely to choose a 226-725cc or higher engine:

  • 39.6% were 226-725cc.
  • 22.4% were 726-1,125cc.
  • 17.4% were over 1,326cc.

Some 31% of owners sometimes have a pillion passenger on their motorcycle.

How far do you travel in a year?

It is often claimed that Australians drive long distances but 70% of visitors to our greenslip calculator don’t travel far at all:

  • 37.4% travel 10,000 kms a year or 27 kms a day.
  • 31.8% travel 5,000 kms a year or 13.7 kms a day.

Do you have other insurance?

While greenslips are a mandatory type of insurance, comprehensive or third party property insurance are usually a choice*. Over three quarters have other motor insurance. Owners of motor cars and motorcycles are 7 times more likely to choose comprehensive insurance than third party property insurance:

  • 67.2% of cars have comprehensive insurance.
  • 23.2% of cars have no other insurance.
  • 51% of motorcycles have comprehensive insurance.
  • 7.5% have third party property insurance.

* Owners with secured finance on their vehicles must have comprehensive insurance.

What is your driving record like?

During 2023, most of our greenslip calculator users had no demerit points and did not have an accident, suspension or drug offence on their driving record:

  • 68.3% had no demerit points.
  • 95% had no at-fault accidents in the past 5 years.
  • 98.3% had no at-fault accidents in the past 2 years.
  • 96.9% had no suspensions or cancellations on their licence.

Some 96.6% had no drug and alcohol offences.

How long have you been driving?

Most of our greenslip calculator users have plenty of driving experience:

  • 83% have over 6 years experience.
  • 3.9% have less than a year’s experience.

Less experienced drivers may be driving their parents’ cars and don’t need to use the greenslips.com.au Calculator.

Do you have a current greenslip?

Most users say they have a current green slip with one of the 6 insurers:

  • AAMI               12.3%
  • Allianz             13.3%
  • GIO                  11.2%
  • QBE                 21.0%
  • Youi                   5.8%
  • NRMA             15.8%

Meanwhile, 20.6% chose another brand of the 6 insurers, such as Apia or Shannons, or had no current greenslip. While a loyal 10% of users had 25 years+ relationship with NRMA Insurance, 53.5% had no relationship at all.
