greenslips.com.au has helped people save money on their green slip for over 20 years. Find out how green slip prices are set, why they vary and how you may be able to reduce your price. Always compare green slip prices before you register your vehicle, so you know you are paying the cheapest price.

How can I compare green slip prices?

The fastest way to compare green slip prices is to use the greenslips.com.au Calculator. It provides quotes from each of the 6 green slip insurers, based on your vehicle and details. They are listed from the cheapest to the most expensive.  .

  • It is quicker to use the calculator and answer one set of questions with results for 6 insurers, than to contact each insurer separately and answer the same questions each time.
  • You will receive regulated green slip prices, the same ones that insurers submit to the regulator. By law, nobody is allowed to quote prices that are different from these regulated prices. Prices will match when based on the same information about you and your vehicle.
  • Green slip prices vary throughout the year.

It also funds the Lifetime Care and Support Scheme, for people with catastrophic, lifetime injuries.

Why do prices vary between insurers?

Prices vary because each insurer has a different way of setting green slip prices. They set prices, based on their appetites for risk, the cost of claims and market competition. Some insurers will put more weight on certain factors, such as demerit points, when setting their premiums.

Greenslip prices have varied considerably in the last 12 years, especially after CTP reform in December 2017.

There are 4 possible ways to reduce your green slip premium.

1. Influence the main factors that affect green slip prices

  • Where you live
  • Your age
  • Driving history
  • Vehicle type
  • Vehicle age

Other than age, you can influence these factors. Aim to drive a newer car with more safety features. Maintain a safe driving record with no traffic offences or demerit points. Young people with a good driving record will get cheaper green slips when they reach a certain age.

2. Pay for short-term registration

Some vehicle owners prefer to pay for their registration and green slip every 6 months. While this does not reduce the overall cost, it may improve cash flow.

More FAQs

Does the government regulate green slips?

Yes. CTP green slips are highly regulated because they are a type of mandatory insurance provided by private companies. The terms and conditions of each insurer’s green slip policy must be the same.

  • SIRA is the regulator of the NSW CTP green slip scheme.
  • It licenses and supervises the 6 insurers to make sure they provide insurance within legislation and guidelines.
  • SIRA is not involved in vehicle registration. Service NSW is responsible for vehicle registration and driver licensing and is part of Transport for NSW

Will my high-performance car push up my green slip price?

Owning a powerful car may not affect your green slip price unless you are a younger driver. However, speeding or breaking other road rules in your high-performance car could impact your green slip price just as much as your age.

We used the greenslips.com.au Calculator to calculate prices in February 2025 for 2 drivers of powerful cars and less powerful cars.

  • The 45-year-old pays the same for a green slip, whether the vehicle is powerful or not.
  • The 24-year-old pays $185 to $237 more than the 45-year-old, whether the vehicle is powerful or not.

How do I find my cheapest green slip?

Does where I live affect my green slip price?

Where you live can make a big difference to your green slip price.

The regulator sets 5 geographical zones or risk rating areas in NSW. These are:

  • Metro
  • Outer metro
  • Newcastle and Central Coast
  • Wollongong
  • Country.

When insurers set green slip prices, they consider the risk of people making CTP claims in those areas.

  • The cheapest green slips are usually for vehicle owners in Country areas, where the risk of claims for injuries is lower.
  • Vehicle owners in Metro areas pay more for their green slips because the risk of serious injuries is higher.
  • There is no difference between postcodes within the same geographic zone.

Does driving history affect my green slip price?

Yes. Your driving history affects your green slip price and includes:

  • demerit points
  • traffic offences
  • accidents
  • claims.

These all influence your final price. Younger drivers with little experience already pay a higher price and must particularly avoid traffic offences or accruing demerit points. Older drivers with poor driving records generally pay more for their green slips.

Insurers may ask these questions about your driving record

  • How many demerit points are on your licence (and on licences of any other drivers of the vehicle)?
  • Have you had any road accidents in the last 2-5 years that were your fault?
  • Were there any suspensions, disqualifications,  cancellations or restrictions on your drivers licence in the last 3 years?
  • If so, have you had any drug and alcohol convictions in the last 3 years?

Every answer will affect the final price of your green slip.

How much will my green slip cost as a young driver?

Your green slip will probably cost you more now than when you are a more experienced driver. Once you are 27 or more, the price of your green slip should start to fall.

See our young driver’s guide to green slips and the cost of green slips for under 27 year olds.

Will my green slip price increase after an accident?

If you have an accident and make a claim, your green slip price may increase. Making a claim can affect your CTP green slip price even if you were not at fault.

See our complete Claims Guide. Note, the guide does not give advice.
