It’s a popular question to ask how much a green slip is for pensioners. In NSW, having a pension doesn’t make your green slip price cheaper. However, your vehicle registration is free and you may receive other motoring concessions.
There is no discount on green slips for pensioners
There is no discount on your green slip because you are a pensioner.
- Insurers set prices using many factors but having a pension is not one of them.
- The green slip price is based on your vehicle, driving record, claims and insurance history.
Pensioners can compare quotes using the green slip calculator in the same way as other vehicle owners. You will get a cheaper green slip if you have a good driving history and a reasonably safe, insured vehicle.
NSW registration is free for pensioners
NSW registration is free for vehicle owners who are on a pension. If you hold a NSW pensioner concession card (PCC) from Centrelink or Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA), you can receive other benefits too:
- Pensioners don’t pay registration fees, motor vehicle tax or conditional registration fees.
- DVA pensioners also don’t pay stamp duty or transfer fee when transferring vehicle registration.
Service NSW checks your eligibility for concessions online. They apply to one vehicle only.
Service NSW automatically renews registration
Service NSW automatically renews registration if you’re entitled to free registration and have no vehicle or licence restrictions. Once again, this applies to only one vehicle.
- You must get a pink slip and a green slip before your registration expires.
- Service NSW checks your pensioner status when it confirms purchase of your pink and green slip.
- If you have a Service NSW online account, you receive an email or text message to confirm your registration was renewed.
Are you eligible for pensioner concessions?
To be eligible for these concessions, you must hold a Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) from Centrelink or the DVA.
DVA pensioners must hold:
- DVA Gold Card endorsed with TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated), EDA (Extreme Disability Adjustment) or War widow/er, or
- Disability pension of 70% or more, an Intermediate or EDA pension, or an assessment of 50 or more impairment points.
If you have a pensioner concession card from another state or territory, you can’t claim these concessions in NSW.
When your next green slip is due, use the free green slip calculator to get the cheapest prices for you and your vehicle.
