How to compare green slips for your ute

Do you need a green slip for your ute? For the first time, every new vehicle in Australia’s Top 3 sales in March 2023 was a ute: Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max. This year, light commercials have 22.1%, SUVs have 55.1% and passenger cars only 18.7% of the new car market. Find out how to compare green slips for your ute.

What’s the best way to compare green slip prices for my ute?

The best way to compare green slip prices for your ute is to use the greenslips.com.au Calculator.

Make sure you select Vehicle type as Light Goods Vehicle/Ute to find your Make and Model for its Year of vehicle manufacture. Always select the correct Vehicle variant for an accurate price. If relevant, select Business use and any intention to claim for GST.

You will receive the cheapest prices for your ute from each greenslip insurer in NSW.

How much do ute green slips usually cost?

The cost of green slips for utes depends partly on where you live. Metro prices for all vehicle types, including utes, are around double Country prices because that’s where most serious injuries occur.

We used the greenslips.com.au Calculator to compare prices in each area for a “good”, fully insured male owner, 45, who drives a ute for work and claims for GST. These are the prices he could have paid in April 2023:

Area Price range Difference
Metro utes $707-$821 $114
Outer Metro utes $493-$580   $87
Newcastle and Central Coast utes $421-$496  $75
Wollongong utes $527-$623 $96
Country utes $351-$401   $50

By using the greenslips.com.au Calculator, you could save up to $114 on your greenslip. If you don’t compare prices first, you could pay at least $50 too much for your ute greenslip.

How much is your ute green slip with demerit points?

We used the greenslips.com.au Calculator to compare prices in each area for a male owner with demerit points, 45, third party property insured, who drives a ute for work and claims for GST. These are the prices he could have paid in April 2023:

Area Price range Difference
Metro utes $760-$1188 $428
Outer Metro utes $529-$828   $299
Newcastle and Central Coast utes $453-$708  $255
Wollongong utes $567-$895 $328
Country utes $382-$609   $227

If you have demerit points and use the greenslips.com.au Calculator, you can save up to $428 on your greenslip. If you don’t compare prices first, you could pay at least $227 too much for your ute green slip.

How do insurers set green slip prices for utes?

Insurers set greenslip prices for utes in the same way as for SUVs or passenger cars. Factors include location, any demerit points, youngest driver age and experience, claims history and distance travelled. How much it costs you for a ute greenslip also depends on whether you are a “good” driver (safe, insured) or “bad” driver (demerits, uninsured).

Why do ute greenslips cost more than car greenslips?

Generally, green slip prices are higher for utes than for passenger cars because there is more risk of having an accident and making a claim. Any risks of driving a ute, rather than a car, are reflected in green slip prices. For example, ute owners often travel further for work, and more often than the average vehicle owner.

Are all greenslips for utes the same?

By law, all greenslips for utes (and other types of vehicles) must offer exactly the same cover. Only one insurer offers an extra feature on top of ute, SUV or passenger car green slips in NSW. This is known generically as At-fault Driver Cover. This extra cover does not change cover under the green slip itself.
