The riskiest drivers in NSW

top 10 tips on speed and speeding - riskiest drivers

Certain high-risk age groups could pay up to $284 more for a green slip than other motorists. Who are they and how much can they save by comparing prices?

Young drivers are high-risk

Young drivers on P plates lack driving experience and are much more likely to be in a serious crash

  • 2,290 young drivers 17-25 were seriously injured in the year to March 2025.
  • They made up 20% of all serious injuries.
  • 74 young drivers 17-25 died, up 17% on 3-year average to January 2026.
  • They were 20% of all deaths.

The higher the risk of an accident, the higher the price. greenslips.com.au data found:

  • Young 16-20-year-olds on P plates or a full licence paid the most of all drivers.
  • They pay up to $830 (or $284 more) for a green slip than other drivers.
  • They pay $64-$249 more for a green slip than an experienced 30-year-old driver.
  • Insurer prices varied by only $11, the lowest range of all.

Greenslip prices fall as drivers gain experience

Our data show green slip prices usually fall as drivers become more experienced.

  • The lowest prices available are for very experienced drivers 55 to 75.

Greenslip prices dropped and continued to fall until drivers hit 50 to 55:

  • A 50-year old could pay $5 more than someone who is 45.
  • A 55-year old could pay $24 less – $17 more ($41 difference in prices) than a 50-year old driver.

After that, green slip prices gradually fall again.

Greenslip prices rise for drivers in their 70s

Around age 75, green slip prices start to rise again. Our data show an 80-year old could pay up to $701, which is still cheaper than for someone 16-20.

  • 1,578 of drivers over 70 were seriously injured in year to March 2025.
  • They made up 14% of all serious injuries.
  • 75 older drivers died, up 10% on 3-year average to January 2026.
  • They were 20% of all deaths.
