Some drivers want extra cover in case they’re involved in a road accident and it’s their fault. Is At-Fault Driver Cover worth it? Perhaps, if you drive for work, drive often or travel long distances. Only NRMA Insurance now offers this type of cover on top of its green slip.
What is an at-fault vehicle accident?
An at-fault vehicle accident is one where you’re solely responsible for causing that accident. The insurer of the vehicle decides who is responsible for an accident using all possible evidence.
Am I covered by a green slip if it’s my fault?
You are covered by a green slip, but not as fully as drivers who are not at fault. You can claim benefits for up to 12 months for loss of income and for medical treatment and care.
Your ability to claim for damages is limited. If you’re at fault, you can only claim for damages for economic loss if your injuries are serious. To claim damages for non-economic loss, you must have more than 10% permanent impairment.
Why do I need At-Fault Driver Cover?
At-Fault Driver Cover fills the gap left by a green slip if you were found to be at fault. This extra financial support, even if you cause an accident, may give peace of mind. It could appeal to people who drive for work, are frequently on the road, or drive long distances.
The Lifetime Support Scheme covers all drivers who have catastrophic injuries, such as spine or brain damage, whether they are at fault or not.
What coverage does At Fault Driver Cover provide?
At Fault Driver Cover provides lump sum payments for specific serious injuries. It also pays for medical expenses and rehabilitation or for funeral costs.
If you buy an NRMA Insurance green slip, you automatically receive Driver Protection Cover on top of the usual green slip coverage. The NRMA policy lists all serious injuries for which it pay benefits and the amounts, for example:
- Quadriplegia
- Paraplegia
- Total loss of speech
- Total loss of hearing
- Loss of use of one limb
or
- Death within 6 months of accident.

Is at-fault driver cover worth it for my employees?
If an accident happens while driving for work, the employer is not always responsible. As an employer, you may want extra cover for your drivers in case one of them is liable for an accident. While NRMA Insurance is the only provider of Driver Protection Insurance, employers need to consider any existing relationships with NRMA or another insurer.
