Can I save money with petrol price cycles?

Yes, you can save money with petrol price cycles. Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and Tweed Heads South have 7-week petrol price cycles. In one cycle, prices increase sharply over 2 weeks then decrease gradually over 5 weeks.

The best way to save money is to look for service stations with the slowest increase and the fastest decrease in prices during each cycle. A Sydney motorist who followed price cycles and used fuel apps to find the cheapest fuel at other times would have saved $407 in 2023

6 ways to save money on health insurance

How does it help?

1. Review your policy regularly

Find cheaper policies that offer you better value.

2. Downgrade your cover

Only pay to cover treatments and services you need. Switch from Silver to Bronze Plus, which is cheaper but may still have the same cover.

Consider dropping Extras that you don’t use.

3. Hold an effective policy

Make sure you can claim for the healthcare services and treatments you really need.

Hold a policy that allows you to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS).

4. Adjust your Excess

Paying a higher Excess reduces the cost of your monthly premium.[TM4]

Avoid the MLS with an Excess of $750 or lower (single) or $1,500 or lower (couple, single parent and family policies).

5. Take out cover while young

Take out Hospital Cover in your 20s to qualify for the Age-based Discount available from some insurers, which makes policies cheaper until you turn 41.

If you don’t take out Hospital Cover before you turn 31, you pay a Loading for 10 years. This is 2% for every year older than 30 up to a maximum of 70%.

6. Read terms and conditions for promotions

It’s not a good deal if it’s the wrong policy for your needs and budget.

We strongly recommend reading the terms and conditions of any promotion so you understand exactly what you’re getting and when.

Of course, health insurance is important for peace of mind but nobody wants to pay too much for it.

Make sure you avoid making health insurance mistakes.

Essential to know

Did you know you can take a break from your health insurance if it’s a tough time financially?

  • You can suspend your health cover for short periods (at least 2 months) or longer periods (up to 2 years).
  • Remember you can’t claim for healthcare costs during this break.
