Demerit points affect the price of your green slip. But demerit points also affect green slip prices depending on your age. See what demerit points cost for your age group – and how much you could save on your green slip without those points.
Are you under 23?
If you’re under 23, your green slip is likely to be expensive. You have less driving experience and, understandably are more likely to make mistakes and have an accident.
- For you, the price is the same even if you have demerit points. You have to pay the same high price, around $769-781, because of your age and lack of experience.
However, if you’re on P plates, you can’t afford to get many demerit points before you lose your drivers licence:
- P1s have a limit of 4 demerit points
- P2s have a limit of 7 demerit points.
Are you in your 30s?
At your age, you may already have 15 years of driving experience. Green slips are becoming cheaper for you, around $478, than a young person.
- With 1-2 demerit points, you could pay $84 more for the cheapest green slip.
Demerit points stay on your licence for over 3 years. You could spend $252 more over 3 years, which is like buying more than half of another green slip.
Are you in your 40s?
If you’re 45, you could have 25 years of driving experience and your green slip is still around $478.
- With 1-2 demerit points, you could pay around $83 more for the cheapest green slip.
This could cost you $249 over 3 years, which is like buying more than half of another green slip.
Are you in your 50s?
At your age, your green slip has become cheaper at around $459.
- With 1-2 demerit points, you could pay $65 more for the cheapest green slip.
This could cost you $195 over 3 years, which is like buying 40% of another green slip.
Are you in your 60s?
If you’re 65, your green slip is still around $459 but the price will start to increase when you reach 70.
- With 1-2 demerit points, you could pay $68 more for the cheapest green slip.
This could cost $204 over 3 years, which is like buying 40% of another green slip.
How did we get these green slip prices?
We used the green slip calculator to work out these prices for an imaginary female driver who lives in the Sydney metro area.
Our research found:

Green slip prices fall more slowly with your age, if the driver has demerit points.
