The 3 biggest mistakes I made when choosing a green slip

Mistakes I made with green slips

It’s easy to make mistakes when choosing a green slip because you want to get it done quickly. Here are the 3 biggest mistakes you could make and how to choose a green slip without the stress.

1. I didn’t compare green slip prices

I didn’t compare prices because I thought all insurers were exactly the same. I read somewhere all green slips have the same cover, so why should they be different prices?

It’s true that all green slips have the same cover, by law. However, insurers charge many different prices for a green slip, based on the driver, their driving record and their exact vehicle.

For example, a green slip for a P plater with an old Ranger garaged in Newcastle will pay a different price to an experienced driver with a fairly new Rav4 garaged in Newtown.

You won’t make that mistake again. It’s fast and easy to compare prices using the green slip calculator.

2. I renewed with my current insurer

I renewed with my current insurer because it was easier. I didn’t realise my circumstances had changed a lot, which put the price up. I’d got a couple of demerit points on my licence and moved to Sydney from Wollongong.

The insurer that was cheapest for you last time may not be the cheapest insurer for you next time. One or more demerit points can really push up the price and Sydney green slip prices are generally higher than in other areas of NSW. When you compare green slips, you can see insurers price one or more demerit points differently. You may find another insurer more competitive for this.

Next time, compare prices before you renew.

3. I bought the most expensive green slip

I bought the most expensive green slip because I thought it would give me more coverage. You know you usually get what you pay for.

Even if you buy the most expensive green slip, it doesn’t give you more coverage. Green slip coverage is the same, whether you buy the cheapest or the most expensive. However, you may still have reasons to buy the most expensive green slip:

  • You have an existing relationship with an insurer.
  • It’s more convenient for you to pay that insurer, say, in person.
  • You want extra cover for at-fault drivers.
  • Having that insurer’s green slip gives you discounts on other types of insurance.

Make sure you compare green slip prices, so you can choose the insurer that’s right for you.
