Motorcycle engine size makes a big difference to your green slip price. But does it cost more for a pillion passenger? Is it cheaper if you insure your bike? We answered these questions and more using June 2026 data from the green slip calculator. Some of the results may surprise you.
Does a green slip cost more with a pillion passenger?
You might think it costs more for a green slip with a pillion passenger because you’re insuring 2 people, not just one. But it’s usually not the case.
We used the green slip calculator to compare green slip prices for each engine size, with and without a pillion passenger.

Green slip price ranges were the same for 3 engine sizes. Only the largest bikes, and mid-size bikes saw a small increase in the lowest (but not highest) price.
With a pillion passenger:
- Owners of 726-1,125cc bikes could pay $16 more for a green slip.
- Owners of 1,326cc+ bikes could pay $37 more for a green slip.
Do all motorcycle riders insure their bikes?
Not all motorcycle riders insure their bikes. In fact, 41.4% of all motorcycles are uninsured.
Only 226-725cc and 726-1,125cc bikes are more likely to be insured than not.
