What type of vehicle registration do I need?

We look at 5 different types of vehicle registration: concessional, conditional, taxi, seasonal, and unregistered vehicle permits. Do you know what type of registration your vehicle needs?

I’m a pensioner and need concessional registration

You don’t need to do anything to get concessional registration. Service NSW checks your pensioner status after you have bought a green slip and, if needed, a pink slip. If you are an eligible pensioner, it’s free to register your vehicle in NSW.

You can get automatic registration renewal for your vehicle, as long as there are no restrictions on your licence or vehicle. In fact, eligible pensioners don’t have to pay:

  • Registration fees, including HVIS inspection fees
  • Motor vehicle tax
  • Conditional registration fees
  • Transfer fee and stamp duty – for DVA pensioners only.

Remember, there are no pensioner concessions on a green slip. The price of your green slip depends on your vehicle and driving history, as it does for everyone.

I need to register a historic/classic vehicle

Conditional registration is for vehicles like yours that need limited road access. As these vehicles don’t comply with the usual vehicle design and standards, they can be driven only under strict conditions.

Unlike standard vehicle registration, conditional registration includes CTP insurance. You don’t have to pay for CTP insurance separately.

The process to apply for conditional registration is similar to applying for ordinary registration. You need to go in person the first time to Service NSW with these documents

If you plan to drive your vehicle more regularly, then you need to register it in the usual way

I want to register to drive a taxi

Registering a taxi for the first time is similar to registering a private vehicle but with extra requirements:

  • Proof of identity and entitlement to register the vehicle
  • CTP green slip insurance
  • A blue slip
  • Copy of the taxi operator’s Certificate of Accreditation or a letter from the operator advising your vehicle operates under it.
  • A Transaction Authorisation Letter emailed from Point to Point Transport Commissioner
  • Application for Registration

I want to renew a taxi registration

I’m a farmer and need a harvester at certain times

This type of registration is seasonal and usually used for primary production. You can choose combinations of 3 or 6 month periods over 12 months and they don’t have to be consecutive, for example:

  • 2 x 3 months of registration
  • 2 x 6 months of registration
  • 1 x 6 months plus 3 months of registration.

You can renew seasonal registration up to 12 months after the expiry date but no later. If you want to register your vehicle for 12 months, you must convert to a standard registration.

For seasonal vehicle registration, you have to buy CTP green slip insurance first. Apply for seasonal registration

I need temporary vehicle registration to drive from NSW to Queensland

For temporary registration, you need an unregistered vehicle permit (UVP) A UVP does not cover regular use of a vehicle

You can apply for a UVP for specific trips only and for travel only by the most direct route, such as:

  • One single or return journey
  • Trips over a few days up to 28 days
  • Travel from interstate to NSW or from NSW to interstate
  • A specific vehicle and purpose, eg, harvesting, for up to 28 days.

You can’t use this permit for repairs, insurance or registration. In fact, a UVP automatically cancels registration and you must hand in the vehicle’s number plates.

Note: NSW authorities recognise permits from interstate and any conditions attached to them.
