Top 10 questions about green slips

top 10 questions about green slips

Do you have a question about your green slip? There are some questions we get asked all the time. After 25 years of green slip expertise, we’re well qualified to answer them.

1. How can pensioners get a cheaper price for a green slip?

Being a pensioner doesn’t get you a cheaper green slip price. Insurers don’t consider pensions in their pricing. Other factors do make a difference to the price of your green slip:

  • For example, your age, postcode, vehicle type, driving experience, motor insurance, demerit points and recent accidents
  • If you can change any of these factors, you may get a cheaper price.

2. Why don’t you cover all the insurers?

We do cover all the insurers. There are only 6 licensed CTP insurers in NSW. These are AAMI, Allianz, GIO, NRMA Insurance, QBE and Youi.

Two insurers sell green slips under other brand names.

  • APIA and Shannons sell GIO green slips, Kogan and AusPost sell QBE green slips.
  • No matter where you buy your green slip, it still comes from one of the 6 CTP insurers.

3. Can I get discounts on my green slip?

No, you can’t get any further discounts on your green slip because discounts are already built into your answers to insurer questions. In fact, no-one is allowed to offer discounts on green slips and anyone who appears to be doing so may be breaking the law.

Essential to know

  • Companies can offer discounts on other types of insurance if you hold your green slip with them.
  • The discount is not on the green slip but on another product, and it’s a reward for your loyalty.

4. Do green slips cover damage to my car?

No, green slips don’t cover damage to your car. They cover the injuries or death of people in a motor crash involving your car. You need to buy a type of motor insurance to cover damage to your car:

  • Comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car and property or the car and property of someone else.
  • Third party property insurance covers damage to someone else’s car and property, but not yours.

5. Can I transfer a green slip to my other car?

No, the green slip always stays with the registered car because you can’t register a car without a green slip

If you sell or buy a registered car, the green slip automatically transfers with the car. When it’s time to renew registration of that car, the new green slip will reflect the new owner’s details.

6. Can I get a refund on my green slip when I sell my car?

No. The green slip remains on the car you sold – the price you sold it for included registration and green slip.

Remember, you can cancel your green slip only when:

  • You cancel registration of your vehicle, or
  • You have moved interstate, or
  • Your vehicle is written off.

Service NSW issues a cancellation of registration letter to use as proof for your CTP insurer. Your insurer can then pay a refund less an admin fee.

7. What happens when there is no youngest driver?

This is a common misunderstanding. If you are the only driver, you are also the youngest driver of the vehicle. This means you need to state your own age again and your years of driving experience.

Remember, you don’t need to be young to be the youngest driver

8. Why does the other suburb in my postcode pay less for a green slip?

Some suburbs pay more than others in the same postcode because they’re in a different rating region. Prices for green slips are partly based on the risk of residents having an accident and making a claim.

There are 5 rating regions in NSW and they are set by government, not by insurers:

Greenslip prices for one split postcode

Postcode Suburb Greenslip price range
2750 All Metro except Emu/Leonay $886-$970
2750 Emu Plains and Leonay $671-$739

For a Ute driver at 1 August.

9. Why can’t I get a 6-month green slip?

A 6-month green slip is available for renewing registration of your vehicle, but never for the first registration. The first registration is for 12 months only.

You must register for 12 months when:

  • Transferring from another state, or
  • Buying an unregistered car that needs a blue slip, or
  • Registration has lapsed by 21 days or more, or
  • When registration was overdue by more than 3 months and cancelled.

10. Does a green slip cover me if I’m at fault in an accident?

Since December 2017, drivers at fault in an accident are partially covered under a green slip. For the first 12 months, they can be paid for treatment of minor injuries and loss of earnings. After 12 months, it depends on the seriousness of their injuries.

  • If you have a type of At-Fault Driver Cover from NRMA Insurance, you will be covered fully.
  • Note, its green slip coverage is still the same as the other insurers.
