Renewing your registration is easier than starting a new registration in NSW. You choose a registration period, buy a green slip, organise a pink slip (if necessary) and pay the fees. Find out how to renew your registration in 4 steps.
Four steps to renew your NSW registration
There are 4 steps to renew your registration in NSW:
- Choose a registration period.
- Get a CTP green slip.
- Organise a pink slip safety check (if your vehicle is 5 or more years old).
- Pay registration fees.
Renewing your registration is easier than starting a new registration in NSW.
1. Choose a registration period
If you have a light vehicle, you can register for 6 or 12 months. You can renew registration for 6 months if you renew within 21 days of the renewal date. After that, you have no choice but to renew for 12 months.
Trailers and heavy vehicles can be registered for 3 or 6 months.
Essential to know
Make sure registration and green slip periods match. For example, if you register your vehicle for 6 months, you must buy a green slip for 6 months.
2. Get a CTP green slip
Use the greenslips.com.au Calculator to compare all 6 insurers in NSW. It shows the cheapest prices available for your vehicle and personal details. You can choose any insurer.
- Buy your green slip online or by phone from your chosen insurer.
- Buy in person from insurers that use brokers or agents, such as the Post Office.
The insurer immediately notifies Service NSW when you have paid for a green slip. This process can take longer from rural or regional Post Offices or agents. If you don’t need a pink slip, you will be ready to register your vehicle.
3. Organise a pink slip safety check
Your vehicle needs a pink slip safety check every year if it is 5 or more years old. Your registration renewal notice tells you if your vehicle needs a safety check. The price of a pink slip is set each year.
