Are you a regular user of our greenslips calculator?

Are you a regular user of our greenslips.com.au Calculator? We have analysed all calculator visits during 2023 to get some idea of our typical visitor and the vehicle they drive.

When is your registration due?

As you might expect, the biggest month for vehicle registrations is June. This is when dealers usually offer attractive end of financial year prices.

  • 10% of all registrations are due in June.
  • 9% of registrations are due in each of July, August and September.
  • The slowest months are January and February, each around 7% of registrations.

Do you have trouble remembering when your registration is due? Ask greenslips.com.au to send you one or more of our registration reminder stickers. It’s cheaper to renew your registration on time.

What vehicle do you own?

New utes are the top 3 sellers in Australia. However, most regular users of our calculator own a passenger vehicle rather than a ute:

  • 16% own a ute or light goods vehicle.
  • 8% own a motorcycle.

The average age of a vehicle in Australia is 11.7 years. In our calculator, there were more vehicles 6-12 years old than 0-6 years old and a cluster manufactured in 2015-2017.

Most regular users drove SUVs or wagons with an automatic transmission for personal use, but:

  • A quarter own a sedan.
  • A fifth drive a manual.
  • 4% run a vehicle for business use and claim for GST.

Owners of motorcycles are more likely to choose an engine 226-725cc or higher:

  • 39% are 226-725cc.
  • 23% are 726-1125cc.
  • 18% are over 1326cc.

Just under a third (31%) of owners sometimes have a pillion passenger on their motorcycle.

How far do you travel in a year?

Australia may be a big country, but two thirds of calculator users don’t travel far at all:

  • Under a third (31%) travel 5,000 kms a year or 13.7 kms a day.
  • Over a third (37%) travel 10,000 kms a year or 27 kms a day.

ABS statistics show average distance travelled each year is 13,000 kms.

Do you have other insurance?

Other insurance refers to comprehensive or third party property insurance. Over three quarters of car owners hold other motor insurance. Car and motorcycle owners are 7 times more likely to buy comprehensive* than third party property insurance:

  • Over two thirds (67%) of cars have comprehensive insurance.
  • 23% of cars have no other insurance.
  • 87% of motorcycles have comprehensive insurance.
  • 42% of motorcycles have no other insurance.

*Lenders typically require comprehensive insurance on financed vehicles.

How is your driving record?

During 2023, most regular users of our calculator said they had no demerit points and no accident, suspension or drug offence on their driving record:

  • Over two thirds (68%) had no demerit points and a fifth (22%) had 1-4 demerits.
  • 5% had an at-fault accident in the past 5 years.
  • 2% had an at-fault accident in the past 2 years.
  • Only 3 in a 1,000 visitors had a drug and alcohol offence in the previous year.

How long have you been driving?

Most regular calculator users say they have plenty of driving experience:

  • 83% have more than 6 years experience.
  • Only 4% have less than a year’s experience.

Less experienced drivers and learners may be driving their parents’ cars and don’t need to use the greenslips.com.au Calculator.

Do you have a current greenslip?

Most regular users say they have a current green slip with one of the six insurers:

Insurer % of Calculator users
AAMI     12%
Allianz  13%
GIO   11%
NRMA Insurance  16%
QBE  21%
Youi    6%

A fifth (21%) had another brand of the six insurers, such as Apia or Shannons, or no current greenslip. While a loyal 10% of users had 25 years+ relationship with NRMA Insurance, over half (53%) had no relationship at all.

Most of our visitors (83%) had bought their last greenslip for 12 months rather than 6 months.

Even if you need a greenslip for 6 months, you can still get the cheapest prices from the greenslips.com.au Calculator. Our greenslips.com.au Calculator and up to date information is designed to give you the confidence to choose an insurer and find the cheapest prices.
