What is a registration period?
A registration period for light vehicles in NSW is 6 or 12 months. If you own a heavy vehicle or trailer, you have the extra option of 3 months.
The period of your green slip must match the registration period. If you register for 12 months, you have to buy a green slip for 12 months.
Do I always have a choice of registration period?
No. There are cases when you have to register your vehicle for 12 months:
- First registration of a vehicle in NSW
- Registration (6 or 12 months) was not renewed within 21 days
- Registration (6 or 12 months) was not renewed within 3 months and cancelled
- Vehicle is being transferred from interstate.

Can you get 3 months rego in NSW?
Not usually, but if you want to register a heavy vehicle 4.5 GVM or more, you can get 3 months rego in NSW. You can also register a trailer for 3 months.
- You can’t get 3 months rego for a light vehicle under 4.5 GVM.
- The only registration periods available for light vehicles are 6 or 12 months.
When does my vehicle registration expire?
Registration expires at midnight on the day before the renewal date on your Registration Renewal Notice.
For example, if you first registered your Toyota Rav4 on 30 September 2025, registration expires at midnight on 29 September 2026.
