How much is a green slip for pensioners?

Do you confuse free registration with a free or discounted green slip? As a pensioner, your NSW registration is free but you still have to pay for a green slip. Save money with other motoring concessions – and always compare insurer prices.

Can pensioners get a discount on green slips?

No, pensioners can’t get a discount on green slips because they hold a pension.

Insurers set green slip prices using many factors but having a pension is not one of them. Green slip prices are based on risk profiles, such as your driving history, rather than financial status.

  • All green slip prices are based on your vehicle, driving record, and claims and insurance history.
  • Your green slip should be cheaper if you have a good driving history and a reasonably safe, insured vehicle.

When your next green slip is due, use the green slip calculator to get the cheapest prices for you and your vehicle.

Essential to know

  • NSW is the same as other states and territories, except Victoria, as it doesn’t offer any concession on CTP green slip insurance for pensioners.
  • Pensioners in Victoria with a concession card can get a 50% discount on both vehicle registration and Transport Accident Commission fees (includes CTP insurance).

How do I get a cheaper green slip?

You can get a cheaper green slip by improving your driving record. For example, avoid demerit points and traffic offences, and drive a safer, insured vehicle.

We used the green slip calculator to compare green slip prices for a 68 year old pensioner with an insured 5-year-old sedan. In one case, she had no demerit points, in the other case she had 2 demerit points.

  • This driver could pay an extra $91 to $190 (17% to 30%) more for a green slip, if she has only 2 demerit points.

Save money by avoiding demerit points.

Can pensioners get free registration in NSW?

Yes. NSW registration is free for vehicle owners with a NSW pensioner concession card (PCC) from Centrelink or Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA). These motoring concessions are for one vehicle only:

  • Pensioners and DVA pensioners don’t pay registration fees, motor vehicle tax or conditional registration fees.
  • DVA pensioners don’t pay stamp duty or transfer fees when transferring vehicle registration.

Service NSW checks your eligibility for concessions online.

Am I eligible for these pensioner concessions?

You are eligible for these concessions if you hold a Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) from Centrelink or the DVA.

Remember, you can’t claim these concessions in NSW if you have a pensioner concession card from another state or territory.

How does Service NSW renew my free registration?

You will receive a registration renewal notice from Service NSW showing $0 for registration.

What to do next

  1. Organise a pink slip if your renewal notice says so (i.e. your vehicle is 5 or more years old).
  2. Use the green slip calculator to find the cheapest price.
  3. Pay for your green slip – the insurer notifies Service NSW.
  4. Service NSW confirms your pink and green slip then checks your pensioner status.
  5. You receive an email or text message to confirm free registration renewal.

Once again, free registration applies to one vehicle only.

Can pensioners save money in other ways?

Yes you can save money. Ask yourself these questions:

Do I have low mileage? – You may get specific insurer discounts, such as Pay as you drive.

Am I a senior driver? APIA, Australian Seniors Insurance Agency and National Seniors offer policies specifically for senior drivers.

Do I have a disability parking permit? You can get insurance just for your circumstances.

Do I drive safely? Your green slip will be cheaper.
