When is your registration due?
Did you know there’s a big spike in NSW vehicle registrations in June? This is when dealers offer compelling end of financial year prices.
- 10.8% of all registrations are due in June.
- Next are February, March and May, with around 9% of registrations in each month.
- The slowest month is December with 6.8% of registrations.

What vehicle do you own?
Australians love their utes and Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux are still top sellers. However, most calculator visitors own a passenger vehicle rather than a ute or light goods vehicle.
- 17.1% own a ute or light goods vehicle.*
- 8.3% own a motorcycle.
Most visitors who use our green slip calculator drove automatic SUVs or wagons for personal use, but:
- Nearly a quarter (23.4%) own a sedan.
- Less than a fifth (17.8%) drive a manual.
- Only 4.2% run a vehicle for business use and claim for GST.*

The average age of a vehicle in Australia is 11.4 years. The biggest cluster of vehicles in our calculator was made in 2017, with 2023 not far behind.
Do you ride a motorcycle?
Owners of motorcycles made up 8.3% of people who use our green slip calculator (3.7% of all registered vehicles in NSW). Most prefer engines 226-725cc or higher:
- 37.1% are 226-725cc.
- 23.3% are 726-1125cc.
- 17.9% are over 1326cc.
Just under a third (27.6%) of owners sometimes have a pillion passenger on their motorcycle.
- Motorcycles are 6 times more likely to be covered by comprehensive than third party property insurance.
- A quarter (24.7%) of motorcycles are not covered by any other insurance.
Do you have other motor insurance?
Other motor insurance refers to comprehensive or third party property insurance. Over three quarters of car owners hold other motor insurance:
- Over two thirds (67.4%) of cars have comprehensive insurance**.
- 17.1% of cars have no motor insurance.
**Lenders typically require comprehensive insurance on financed vehicles.
How far do you travel in a year?
We live in a big country but two thirds of people who use our green slip calculator don’t travel far at all:
- Well over a third (37.3%) travel 10,000 kms a year (27 kms a day).
- Under a third (32.5%) travel 5,000 kms a year (13.7 kms a day).
Most of our visitors are below the Australian average of driving just over 12,000 kms a year.
How is your driving record?
During 2024-2025, over two thirds (69.1%) said they had no demerit points on their licence.
- Nearly a fifth (19.2%) had 1-4 demerit points.
Very few had a recent at-fault accident, suspension or drug offence on their driving record:
- 5.2% had an at-fault accident in the past 5 years.
- 2.5% had an at-fault accident in the past 2 years.
- Only 0.3% of visitors had a drug and alcohol offence in the previous year.
How long have you been driving?
Most people who use our green slip calculator have plenty of driving experience:
- 83.9% have more than 6 years’ experience.
- Only 3.7% have less than a year’s experience.
Perhaps less experienced drivers and learners don’t use the green slip calculator because they’re driving their parents’ cars.
Do you have a current green slip?
Most users have a current green slip with one of the 6 insurers. A tenth (10.3%) had a green slip from another brand of the 6 insurers, such as Apia or Shannons.

While a loyal 12.6% of users had 25 years+ relationship with NRMA Insurance, half (50.9%) had no relationship at all.
Most of our visitors (82.5%) chose a green slip for 12 months.
