Should e-bikes have a green slip?

e-bikes green slips

Do you think owners of e-bikes should have to buy a green slip? Legal experts and doctors are pushing for mandatory insurance after a spate of injuries, double the number from last year.

More injuries from e-bike crashes

E-bikes and e-scooters are popular, with over a million in NSW alone.

During 2025, 153 people went to St Vincents hospital alone with injuries from e-bike collisions. The number of people injured was higher than 103 in 2024 and 45 in 2023.

Electronic bike injuries were serious because they were more like motorbike collisions than bicycle collisions. Most accidents were caused by going too fast, failing to wear protective equipment or being affected by alcohol.

Government review of potential insurance

Now the government has asked NSW Treasury to explore insurance for privately owned e-bikes. They will pay attention to affordability, as well as type of insurance, because most owners are aged 25-34.

It will be interesting to see whether the NSW government mandates green slips for e-bikes.

One of the biggest problems we see is people riding these heavy, fast-moving bikes on the pavements. In fact, nobody on any kind of bicycle is supposed to ride on the pavement unless they are supervising a child.
