Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is the government authority responsible for managing transport in New South Wales. 

  • TfNSW oversees all modes of transport in NSW, including road, rail, ferry, light rail, point to point, cycling, walking and regional air.
  • Service NSW handles registration, licensing, tolling, demerits and other vehicle transactions for TfNSW.

TfNSW replaced the RMS

TfNSW replaced Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) on 20 November 2019 under Transport Administration Act 1988 (the Act). All roads and transport functions were transferred to TfNSW to:

  • Plan a transport system that meets the needs and expectations of the public.
  • Promote safety, reliability and integrated decision-making across all public transport.
  • Ensure transport infrastructure projects are efficient.
  • Encourage economic development and investment.

It has many roles, including strategy, planning, policy, funding and procurement and special projects, such as light rail.
