How do I get a refund on my green slip?
There are 2 steps to get a refund on your green slip:
- Cancel registration of your vehicle.
- Ask your insurer for a green slip refund.
You have to cancel registration of your vehicle before you can ask your insurer for a green slip refund.
Essential to know
- Do not confuse green slip refunds from cancelled registration with green slip refunds available in 2018 after NSW CTP reform.
- Those refunds have not been available for many years.
1. How do I cancel registration of my vehicle?
If you are the vehicle owner, you have to visit Service NSW to cancel registration.
You need to take these with you:
- Registration certificate
- Number plates
- Your proof of identity
- Fees
- Completed forms Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration and Request for refund of NSW registration.
While registration fees are non-refundable, you may receive unused vehicle tax. You also receive a letter showing cancellation of registration.
Remember, you can cancel your green slip only when:
- You cancel registration of your vehicle
- You have moved interstate, or
- Your vehicle is written off.
2. How do I get a green slip refund?
Service NSW issues a cancellation of registration letter to use as proof for your CTP insurer. Once the insurer receives proof of cancellation, they pay a pro rata refund on the remaining period of your green slip. They may also refund some of the Fund Levy, less an administration fee.
Each insurer has a different process to request a green slip refund. In general, you have to forward confirmation of cancelled registration and a request to cancel your green slip.
Make sure you contact the correct CTP insurer of your vehicle.

What do I do if my car is written off?
If your car is written off, you have to take the number plates to Service NSW within 14 days.
- The CTP green slip on the vehicle continues for 4 business days after the registration cancellation date.
- Your insurer may pay a pro rata refund of any period left on your green slip less an administration fee.
When the insurer classifies your car as written-off, it is recorded on the NSW Written-Off Vehicle Register. You will receive a letter to say your car has been written-off and the registration cancelled. Next you can request a refund of your green slip.
