You can get a green slip refund in only 3 cases. You’ve cancelled registration of your vehicle, your vehicle is written off, or you’ve moved interstate. It’s a simple 2-step process: first cancel registration of your vehicle then ask your insurer for a green slip refund.
Can I get a green slip refund?
To get a green slip refund, you must first cancel registration of your vehicle. Once you have cancelled registration, you can ask your insurer for a green slip refund.
If you would like to get a green slip refund, first make sure you qualify:
- You’ve cancelled registration of your vehicle, or
- Your vehicle is written off, or
- You’ve moved interstate.
These are the only cases where you can get a green slip refund.
Essential to know
You can’t cancel your green slip if:
- You sold your vehicle – the registration and green slip remains on the vehicle you sold.
- You change your mind about your choice of insurer during the registration period.
How do I cancel registration?
To cancel registration, you have to be the registered owner of the vehicle. You need to visit Service NSW in person before registration expires and take these items with you:
- Registration certificate
- Number plates
- Proof of identity
- Fees of $35 (at 1 May 2025)
- Completed forms Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration and Request for refund of NSW registration .
While you can’t get a refund of registration fees, you may receive any unused vehicle tax. Service NSW will give you a letter showing vehicle registration has been cancelled.
How do I ask for a green slip refund?
Your insurer needs to see the Service NSW letter showing registration has been cancelled. Usually, you send both the letter and a request to cancel your green slip. Each insurer has a different process for cancelling a green slip.
Insurers pay a pro rata refund on the remaining period of your green slip and the Fund Levy, less an administration fee.
Make sure you know the CTP insurer of your vehicle. This service works only while your vehicle is registered.
Essential to know
Don’t confuse green slip refunds after cancelled registration with green slip refunds available in 2018 after NSW CTP reform. Those refunds have not been available for many years.
