Great site thanks. I bet the insurance compaines make lots of money out of greenslips being compulsory. Are greenslips required in other states and how do their prices compare with NSW?
|

I know fuel costs a lot more than it needs to because of the govt's extra taxes & duties. And I bet the price of greenslips is higher for the same reason. And then we pay GST on top again. Give me a break. |

Hi there. Thanks for all the info. It's a great help. Regards, Allan.

I paid my greenslip renewal in a hurry because I was going on holiday but now I'm back there's another insurer at $100 cheaper. I want to cancel the first greenslip and get the cheaper one but they won't let me. I don't like being ripped off. I hope your readers learn from my experience. |

I'm sick of motorbikes being discriminated against. We pay a fortune in tolls, rego and greenslips when we only have 2 wheels and a fraction of a cars weight, plus we're better for the environment. When are we going to get a fair go? |

About time we had a neutral Greenslip site. I get bombarded in the mail and email by insurers promising "the best", "most reliable", "fastest claims" or "cheapest". The only site available for genuine comparison has been the State Govt one and who'd trust them. They run a 3rd World transport system and don't do that well either. |

Discovered the price comparison for the first time today. Great thanks |

Found the site today through google. Very helpful to get a handle on greenslip prices. Will be back! |

Can anyone explain to me why motorbike CTPs are now close to TWICE the CTP cost of a car?!?!? This is crazy! Are insurance companies saying that I'm more likely to injure third parties with my bike than my car??? Give me a break! Also the way a bike is categorised (either above or below 300cc) makes no sense and needs to be revised. Finally, why if I have multiple vehicles do I have to pay the full CTP on each?!? I can't drive my car AND ride my bike at the same time therefore the risk of causing an accident (and therefore the cost of CTP) should be reduced! |

Rob,
You raise a lot of good points.
We surveyed prices for 600 vehicles. The average motorbike price was $109.21 higher than the average motorcar price. The difference in price is a function of the insurers view of motorbikes. Despite the classification in the MAA cost comparison, insurers can differentiate greenslip prices on the basis of engine capacity, if they choose to. Greenslip prices are not discounted on the basis of multiple vehicle ownerships (other than for fleets), which is probably fair enough. There will be occassions when several vehicles of one owner are on the road at the same time. Thanks for your comments |

How is this for a rip off! I purchased a car in Canberra and will transfer the registration to NSW. The previous owner paid $386.25 for CTP ins only 4 months ago. They tell me this CTP cannot be transferred as is normal with rego, because it is an interstate transfer. I must now pay $253.80 for a new policy, (which is $25.80 up on my existing policy from December last)
So the insurance company gets a free 257.50, plus my new policy. Not a bad little earner! Thanks for a great site.. |

Moving from Victoria and trying to navigate my way around the NSW transport registration system has certainly been challenging to say the least. In response to one of the comments - no, CTPs are not required in Victoria nor compulsory annual inspection reports. When you register your vehicle in Victoria, the compulsory third party insurance is included in the registration which certainly saves alot of time and hassle about shopping around for which insurance is best. Average Victorian rego (incl. 3rd party insurance) for bog standard 10 year old vehicle would be around $580-600. Better get back to my ctp quotes - why is there such a huge difference between some of them? |

In regards to Robs comment about bike CTP, a friend of mine from the Ulysses Club put me onto Monaland Pty Ltd who do there members greenslips, much cheaper than the major insurers. I just had to join Ulysses and saved heaps, even with the joining fee. My advise would be to shop around not just pay the renewal, Monaland.com.au

Nick, thank you for your comment.
Monaland provide motorbike greenslips through CIC Allianz on a fleet rate for Ulysses members. For Ulysses members this is another price option worth checking. |

I am currently a driver 24 years of age and am wondering if I drive a friends car (over 25) and am involved in an accident, will the friends green slip cover injury to the other vehicles driver if they purchased their green slip based on them being over 25? or will the green slip not cover me, leaving the other driver able to seek financial compensation from me personally?
Thanks for clearing up the issue. |

Hi, Rob here again talking about CTP for bikes. Thanks for the tips about getting my CTP thru' Monaland. Unfortunately as I'm *only* 36 I can't join Ulysses. :( I've now got my bike CTP renewal from NRMA. Can anyone explain this? They are quoting me $458 to renew, however if you use this site and I put in my details the NRMA quote is $681. Quite a sizeable difference! I'm assuming this is a 'discounted' rate as an incentive to stick with them. While I'm happy to take the lower rate it makes me wonder exactly how much profit they are making at $681!! What I find difficult to swallow about this whole system is that it is so open to let companies rip people off. You must have CTP however only 7 companies supply it. This means that basically they can collude and set whatever price they wish and watch the money pile up. It's very interesting to see that 6 out of the 7's quotes are all with $15 of each other. I think something is very dodgy here. |

Agree with all the comments made by Rob on motorbike CTP prices. I am quite frankly p*ssed off about the prices they are now charging. I mean how can they possibly compare the level of injury a bike can cause in comparrison to a car and charge the same if not more? If the driver of a car is at fault they may injure 4 passengers compared to 1 passenger on a bike. If a car hits pedestrians on the street it could injure a group of at least 6 to 8 people while a bike is only going to hit 1 or 2. If a car hits another car there\'s a possibility of each car being full and injuring 8 to 10 people whereas if a bike hits a car possibly 1 other person apart from the rider would be injured. And then there\'s 5 car pile-ups etc that just wouldn\'t happen with a bike. They just cannot justify the hike in prices for motorbike CTP as these vehicles cannot possibly cause the same level of carnage on our roads. Bikes are the vulnerable party and it\'s usually the fault of another vehicle if there\'s an accident so it would come down to the other drivers insurance. I\'m not saying that bike riders are always in the right but in all honesty they just cop too much flak. I\'ve been riding for 20 years now so no problem about under 30 prices but also too young for Ulysses discount and I have a car to insure as well with no-one but myself driving either vehicle. CORPORATE GREED |

While I\'m having a rant I just want to say that I believe the younger generation are being very unfairly targeted. There have always been hoons on the road and guys pushing the limits - I don\'t think it\'s changed over the years. What has changed is licensing laws that means young people are now P platers for a number of years (3?) instead of only 1 so there are obviously more of them on the roads along with a growth in population - there must be a way of determining that things haven't changed (accident by age rather than P plate per capita). This has enabled the media to hype up their stories and we seem to hear almost daily of P platers involved in accidents or caught speeding etc. The media get at this like a dog with a bone and are always sure of beating up public opinion - with oldies all too ready to mutter something about 'the youth of today' blah blah. This is not to say that I don't think young people need better driver education and shouldn't be careful - just that it's hypocritical to place so much blame on them when it was really pretty much the same 'in our day'.
As a side note (and sorry for length) the driver education that is compulsory for motorbike riders should be rolled out to car drivers as well - or perhaps a course done through school. I know that it really helped me in those early days as a rider to have the competance and confidence to handle it all. |

Last year when i was 24 i paid 540.00 for the ctp greenslip they said that when i turned 25 it would drop to the 300.00 range now that im 25 im looking to pay in the ranges 580.00 - 630.00.. |

Has anyone noticed how easy it is to get money out of insurance companies for accident victims now that they've introduced the MCIS Levy? GIVE ME A BREAK! It's just another thinly veiled attempt to squeeze more money out of already squeezed wallets. I would say 'shame on them' if I thought it would make any difference, wait a minute, I just did. |

I am just amazed by the price of greenslips, and that they have raised the age for being a 'safe' driver. I am 26 and have a completely clean driving record, have had one speeding fine in 9 years of driving, I was hoping things would get cheaper now that i'm over 25... I just got quoted $630 to get a greenslip on my motorcycle! Shouldn't the government be trying to promote the use of cheaper and more environmentally friendly forms of transport? The way i see it the reason why these greenslips are so expensive is because of the high injury rate from motorcycle related accidents. But why i ask you are motorcycle accidents more dangerous than car accidents? Because in many cases the motorcycle has been run off the road by an unsuspecting car driver, or the motorcycle weighing around 150kg runs into a car weighing 1800kg. Of course if the traffic consisted mostly of motorcycles the danger would be greatly reduced, so why isn't it the car driver who has to fork out the extra $300 to insure a motorcycle rider against the possibility that he/she will be overlooked the next time they change lanes? |

Thanks to the government for privatising insurance - now the capitalists have got us by the balls!!! There is no competition! We are forced to pay what they want - What the investors want - what the CEO needs! Ripp Off!!!! BLATANT! How much profits do they need - When is something going to be done about this!!Privitization does not work - Full STOP!!!! It only favours the share holders and CEO's, the wealthy elite...hope they choke on their lobster! |

Just want to nod my total agreement with: "Comment by Rob - Tuesday, 08 July 2008" Can anyone explain to me why motorbike CTPs are now close to TWICE the CTP cost of a car?!?!? This is crazy! Are insurance companies saying that I'm more likely to injure third parties with my bike than my car??? Give me a break! Also the way a bike is categorised (either above or below 300cc) makes no sense and needs to be revised. Finally, why if I have multiple vehicles do I have to pay the full CTP on each?!? I can't drive my car AND ride my bike at the same time therefore the risk of causing an accident (and therefore the cost of CTP) should be reduced!
Motorcycles are unfairly DISCRIMINATED against. They are LESS likely to cause injury to 'other people' - and therefore should pay less CTP. Also, CTP should reduce with multiple vehicles. QBE offer cheaper comprehensive insurance on my bike because I am a "designated rider" - i.e. it's not insured if someone else rides it (no-one does). Same should apply for CTP. Pity the poor buggers with five bikes that they ride once a year on special occasions! My bike CTP is more than my car. It's a ripoff. |
| 26. |
Why aren`t the CTP greenslip and 3rd party property damage combined? This would save a lot of problems. Is it all a scam to get more money into circulation? |
| 27. |
Just received NRMA CTP renewal of AUD 685, previous year 360!!!! The online quote of NRMA displayed a price for exactly the same car/age etc. a price of AUD 461, cheaper than the renewal policy price. How does that work? |
| 28. |
What a rort!
I always knew as a motorcyclist of 40 years I was paying extra to cover the expense of some cage driving idiot hitting me, but now to add insult to injury, I have to try and squash my 178cm frame onto some minibike to be able to afford to ride.
My ex rides a 250 (can't afford car rego), and isn't she going to get a rude shock when she realises it will be cheaper to register her car than to renew the rego on her bike.
Why can't we stand up to this scam, why is it being allowed to happen??
Who do I have to shoot?
Oh, that's right, I had to hand my rifles in.......................... |
