How can a price rise of between 88 and 102 % be justified for motorcyclists who ride a 250cc bike? Most of these riders are commuters - the ones who are saving petrol, traffic jams and the environment, but from 1st July 2010 will be slugged huge increases in green slip prices. The synic would guess that it is a greedy government targetting a significant riding population for maximum gain. i can not think of any situation where i have been slugged a 102% price increase in my 51 years of life to date. This is simply outrageous! What can be done? | |
| 1. |
Totally agree with comments above. Most 250cc cyclists ride to the local railway station or to school or are short journey commuters. Young riders already get slugged with other insurance cover. Remember when green slips first came out? Less than $100 and then competition "assured" us of even cheaper prices - not so. Currently, as a 51 year old with no crashes ever, my green slip with NRMA is $388 for my tiny 250cc Virago. Next year, as I live out of the city, I can expect a 102% increase. It is already more than I pay for my car greenslip. Which vehicle would you prefer to be run into by? I just don't get it. It is unjustified, un Australian, and a rip off. This will surely result in people like me returning to my car and comfort, as I won't benefit in the overall running of the bike. Something has to be done. Who is our voice?
|
| 2. |
I agree with all the preceding comments although they are all focussed on the 250cc\\\'s, to an extent understandably.I ride a 1000cc sports tourer and will take a 27% hit, not as painful but not particularly comfortable either. But in general we are all being hit. Is this an attempt to make motorcycling less attractive or is there some other hidden agenda. I would also not the lack of media hype about Australians being ripped off, would such a change pass so quietly if it was introduced for cars? Who is responsible and who do we contact to lodge our protest, where are all the groups who advocate themselves to be the voice of motorcyclists (MA?). Not happy. |
| 3. |
One thing that is rarely addressed in setting these insurance premiums (and I include comprehensive insurance as well, Shannons exempted) is how often you use your bike, i.e. your exposure to the risks of motorcycling. I have an 1100cc cruiser, 9 years old with 24,000km on the clock which I ride most weekends and occasionally during the week. I am an older motorcyclist with continual riding experience of over 42 years and no accidents but find I am lumped in a category that includes v. fast sports bikes ridden often and stupidly thus exposing themselves to higher risks, which I am to pay for? (My apologies to those sports bike riders who ride well and sensibly.) I think the categories need to be expanded from just an engine capacity, any one have ideas on this? |
| 4. |
I agree, i ride a 250cc bike. What differs a sports 250 from a sports 750? Alot! Yet we get smashed with greenslip prices. I thought a 250 would be alot safer than a 750 but i thought wrong. Im 18 and just got my L's and love riding but something has to be done about this. Oh and a day after the new PM was elected? Seems like a bit of a coincidence dont you think? Bikes should be classed differently, it is really just so unfair for all the people doing the right things on the road. I am disappointed but this will not stop me from riding and i encourage others to keep riding. We should get some kind of incentive for using less emissions, taking up less space on the road. |
| 5. |
This is an absolute injustice to all riders,is this only happening in NSW,if so then its all revenue raising ,where is our voice that we can turn to to help us in this case,,i am very angry at this,i have a 250 i am 46 and only use the bike once a month,,its not fair not fair at all,,,we need to start some sort of petition and have it presented to parliament |
| 6. |
I am nearly 50 years old and have been riding bikes sinch a teenager, I find it a hard pill to swallow that there has been a reclasification of insurance catagories for bikes. I will have a win with nearly a 30% reduction for my 650 but will be slugged a 107% increase on my 250 which will end up being more expensive to insure than the 650 figure that one. Noticably my greenslip price jumped by $80 this year for the 650 eroding any real savings I stand to make with this re clasification. This is not the goverments fault it is nothing but GREED from the 7 insurance companys coluding to fix the price of all greenslips in NSW. The goverment should have an enquiry into the prices we are paying for our insurance as should the ACCC. It is intresting to note that there is no mention of going down the same road with cars figure that |

gday, what a crock, first ciggaretts then the only freedom we get, away from the rat race no more beutiful sunday rides, why dont you just take all our wages and well work for free and live in huts thats the way its going? just bought my second cbr 954 may aswell put it straight on the market again,, and also im with the guys on the 250cc arent they being the carefull ones, instead of buying a bigger bike to loose controll of they play it safe and still get stung what an absolute joke go scab money of the usa not your own hard working society!! |
| 8. |
this is crazy, I have a 1000cc sports bike and live with the price of rego (don't like it though) but I also have a 300cc enduro bike which has NEVER been ridden on the road, and never will, I limited the engine size so rego was reasonable, I am trying to do the right thing when riding in state forrests etc. but am starting to see why there are so many unregistered bikes out in the bush now, when will our state government wake up and provide recreational rego like other states? I know how I am voting next election. |
| 9. |
I posted a comment earlier saying that I was organising a petition & protest ride.
gave the wrong e-mail address. The correct e-mail is: swift_shift@live.com.au.
I have a petition sheet that I've recently made up. I anyone would like it so that they can distribute it & collect some signatures you can contact me via e-mail or phone number provided. |

My green slip has increased from $411 to $660, with all insurers having set identical prices (I have rung, and received quotes from all of them). Im in NSW, 28 years old, and have a perfect history, never had an accident, speeding infringement or anything of the like. I have a late 70's 500cc bike which I ride infrequently, probably once a week. I now cant justify this cost, and it takes all the enjoyment out of having and riding a motorcycle. This price increase cannot be justified, and is simply daylight robbery, even the fee I paid last year I considered extremely excessive. I would really love to know what course of action can be taken collectively as a group so that we can get answers and change. What I simply don't understand is how this bastard of a government keeps getting back into power. I know i didnt vote for them! |
| 11. |
I support a petition and any other form of protest,. I ride a 250cc and now am considering riding unregistered (along with many many others I'm sure). There is no justification for this increase in greenslip which covers the personal insurance for someone we may hurt other than ourselves! My brother who also rides was told that this is to cover the cost of medical damages for pillion passengers however the cost is not flexible for solo bikes. ie; more mumbo-jumbo for a non-justifiable price hike. Other than riding unregistered we may all be tempted to register our bikes interstate.
I am disgusted with this price hike in a time when we should be considering the environment and hence bike riders should be supported and encouraged for using less resources, less pollution, using less petrol, easing congestion… the list goes on.

This has not happened overnight, look at the roads you ride on, particularly in the country, what do we get for our taxes, what do we get for our fuel pricing, blatant revenue raising with the introduction of mobile speed cameras to reduce people from speeding what a joke, the fatalities have never been lower. How is this going to affect the motorcycle industry? This my friends is the begining of the end of motorcycling in this country, I have been riding road bikes for 32 years and i must say that unfortunately blokes my age will be the last to enjoy the freedom of overnighters, tours to the Island, all because our government in the country is so backward, we are so behind the rest of the world I feel ashamed to call myself Australian. If this happened in Europe there would be an uprising against the government, but the laid back average Aussie will again as always bitch and whinge and do nothing ! |
| 13. |
What a joke!! Another example of a government indirectly raising revenue. How does a 250cc commuter compare to a 600cc or 750cc super sport bike?? A little over a year ago the government increased land valuations across NSW when housing prices were in decline. The nett result was eveyone had to pay higher council rates as these are based on land values ... same crime in a different disguise |
| 14. |
The learner legal motorcycle market is the biggest in NSW and continues to grow with over 300 people a week in NSW getting their license every week. THAT is the only reason CTP's have gone up in the 250 class. The government and insurance companies believe they are missing out, so up go the prices. They are criminals as far as i am concerned. Polititians prostitute themselves for profit, forgetting about the communities they are supposed to be serving.
My advice is find someone interstate who will be willing to let you register your bike there using there address. If we all did this, you would see prices come crashing down.
The rich get richer, and the poor get #$%!ed. There are all dogs |
| 15. |
What a joke. I simply cant think of any bill that can just go up by up to 80%. Worse, I cant see even a hint of justification for it. Its just.. "bad luck to you.. we are going to massively increase your compulsary rego" WHY? All the stats I read say bike accidents are reducing? Im certainly sure they are not going up by 80%! Your not going to provide us with better roads... infact wherever you do, you drop the speed limit to 60 so that the cyclists can keep up!
And even if the govt could justify a rise, how on earth did they come up with this split? YOu would think the reason for higher insurance must be the likelyhood of each group resulting in a claim right? So then how does this work? 250cc through the roof, yet 600cc go down, (cause all the supersport riders are so safe right?) 1000cc stays similar (What!!!) yet 1100 - 1300cc goes up a heap (so clearly those riding a ducati 1198 are far more dangerous than Gixx and blade riders!) What on earth had they been dreaming of? All of us who ride, KNOW that makes no sense. How can it be that the green slip for my Speed tripl will be less than my touring set up ZRX1200? I know which one of those 2 is the hoon bike! Do you???
Tell you what useless NSW govt... ill pay it if you can justify it. But you cant can you... thats why you didnt even bother to try.
We need to make a big deal out of this... or it will just be accepted. |
| 16. |
I, like John who posted the first comment, am 51 years old and I have been riding registered bikes in NSW since I was 17. I have ridden big bore bikes but to me there is no greater pleasure than to ride a 250cc or lesser capacity bike. The smaller cc's can be very fuel efficient and far, far less polluting than a car but can also offer performance that is better than many small cars could emulate even in the controlled environment of a race track. This should be a major consideration in choosing any form of personal transport but I am certain that just the word of mouth, publicity that "green slips" will cost up to 107% more for these vehicles will be enough to deter many riders from purchasing a lower cc bike. I have promoted the fun of the quarter litre or less bike to many "lifestyle riders" who seem to believe that more cc's means more prestige amongst their fellow riders for the last 15 years but I guess this pricing structure will kill any hope of getting these riders to downgrade back onto 250cc bikes now.
But the thing that confuses me more than any of this is how these figures to increase green slips were calculated. To find a statistical relationship between the volume of a cylinder and the number of road accidents to justify such a colossal increase in an insurance premium is akin to finding a certain brand of vehicle is involved in more accidents than another brand because more drivers of the first brand look for UFO's when driving. The over 30% increases are unjustifiable at any stretch of the imagination by the MAA and should be referred to Fair Trading before any increases are applied |
| 17. |
absolutely outragous price gouging from the greedy insurance companies, I own and ride enduro bikes and have had 250s for many years as cheaper green slips were enticing enough to have a 2nd or 3rd rego. very angry about this, 100% rise ???? |
| 18. |
Show me a political party that is empathetic to motorcycle riders and I will not only vote for them but I will be promoting their party to everyone I meet!
How is it that a Mazda 3 and my Ford UTE can cost LESS than my litre bike?
I have 2 motorbikes on the road. Perhaps it is cheaper for me to drive my car and congest the roads even more.
How about they consider 'encouraging' people onto motorbikes to lesson the congestion on the roads. |
| 19. |
this is outrageous, all insurance pricing is a scam but this price rise is beyond belief, for motorbikes which can do the least damage to "third party" it is a huge increase. all insurance rate need to have more transparency on how they are derived. |
| 20. |
The NSW Government & the Insurance companies, in each others pockets, what a joke! The M.A.A.....another Joke! U are all double dipping and u know it, but now, so does everybody else. U are all a bunch of filthy money grabbing C....s!.
Motorcyclists, we ride and we Vote! stand up for ur rights, Voice ur opinions and ride on the protest rides!. Together we ride, divided we walk.
Tex |
| 21. |
i would have thought with all the low opinion polls agianst the labor party they would try and win votes not make us bike riders change politicl preferences away from the stupid gooses - my god these idiots run this state - no wonder its gone to shit |
| 22. |
Im not re-registering my bike now, it can sit in the garage and rot, thats how strongly I feel about the cost of the greenslip. I just wonder, what action can be taken by us, so that we can return to a half reasonable rate? Will a change in government achieve this? Regardless, hell would freeze over before I voted for labor. Not in this lifetime. |
| 23. |
One more point, Whats with this load of garbage MAA website for greenslip price comparisons, WHAT A JOKE! All the prices are virtually identical for me, with them most variation being $1 or $2 maximum. Whats the point of this facility, why have it? All the Insuran. companies obviously have a consensus on prices. All the criteria you enter is a load of shit im afraid, it makes no difference what you put in those fields. So, where is the regulation of these prices? This authority is obviously powerless, USELESS BASTARDS. |
| 24. |
If motorcycle greenslip costs take pillion passengers into consideration, then surely they should also consider single-seat motorcycles and license restrictions. L-plate and P-plate riders (whose LAMS bikes are normally 250's and so are hit with the biggest increase in green slip prices) can not legally carry a pillion, so why are they paying for it? |
| 25. |
I\'m a collector of two stroke road bikes. These bikes don\'t get ridden much. I have two 250s registered, and each maybe gets used 3 or 4 times a year on the road, and maybe the same number of times at track days.
I can\'t see the justification of such a hike for such little use. I won\'t be able to keep them on the road. I wish there was some useage based pricing like there is with comprehensive insurance.
I\'ve never had a claim on greeslip insurance in twenty-five years of riding and driving, where is the discount for that?
Its incredibly unfair. Wonder which bike hating buraucrat came up with this? |
| 26. |
My 30 year old honda 250 has 26 horsepower and wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding..How the hell can they put it in the same class as a 125 HP 600 sports bike ? If they were genuine they would calculate the prices by the power to weight ratio. My bike also gets 80 MPG.Doesnt that count for anything with these greedy grubs. We should park our 250s in the garage when the rego falls due and take the plate to the RTA and tell them we are not copping it !!! |
| 27. |
When will the politicans learn?, they say save the planet, then they cucify anyone who does their bit by saving fuel / roads, etc by riding a bike, or is it because they have stuffed up again & decided to screw us [AGAIN!] by revenue raising using bullshit statistics twisted to suit their cause! |
| 28. |
Well here we go again! Put the price up and force us of the road, they tried that before. I have two road bikes one is a 1000cc the other an 1100 both use less fuel combined than my 6lt Chrysler, Why is it that motorcyclists continually subsidise everyone else?
Let’s face it most bike accidents are caused by car drivers not paying attention to what’s going on around them, I know I have been in that position twice, How often is a pillion on a bike when you are in the unfortunate position of coming of after hitting a pothole or sliding on a fresh squirt of tar up the middle of the road? Not very often if at all.
You wouldn’t mind the mindless expense of trying to keep your bike legal and registered if they put the money back into driver/rider education and roads instead of coming up with new ways on how to rip us off, all it is, is revenue raising just like the new speed cameras! yep there going to save a bag load of lives, yeah right!
I am 51 and have been riding since I was.... well a long time! And yes I am proud to speak up and say pull your bloody heads in and stop victimising the few for the sake of the blatant fund raising that is running rife in all sectors of the government, give the motorcyclists a damn fair go! Particularly the people on bikes under 300cc, there saving the environment and traffic congestion for goodness sake! So I urge more of us to take a stand and say enough is enough there are a hell of allot of voters that ride bikes.
|
| 29. |
So how long before we see this extending over to cars and trrucks, after an election or before.
It\'s all been said above so I dont need to say it again.
I\'d like to know a gew things though.
What are the real reasons for this, what justifies such increases? What studies and stats are there to support such an increase or was it put through to take focus away form the other things our gooberment wants to also screw us for? |
| 30. |
Did a bit of homework today. Im sure a lot of you know someone in Victoria? As it so happens my GF lives there so --- my address has suddenly changed. Last year my 1200 GS CTP was $380. Just got my renewal $553! WTF! No accidents eva! Mid 40s (sad i know) I live in a medium risk area (WTF has the area in which i live got to do with it?). Not only that, what has the age of the vehicle have to do with it? My insurer information booklet states that the " MAA (motor accidents authority) operates correctly and fairly". There is nothing "Fair" about all this. As has been stated previously, how much damage can we motorcyclists do to other road users? Finally, the insurer i choose (cause they are the cheapest ) informs me i may notice a change to CTP pricing --- no Shit! One of the reasons being ---- an increase in average weekly earnings! So -- everyone wants a slice of the pay rise i have NOT had for the past 3 years! Dont start me on TOLL roads! Back to the point, rang Vic Roads today, rego is $502 and $15 for a new plate, no RWC required! Will be gettin my blue plate next week thanks. See you all at the protest ride ay ?
|
| 31. |
Another greedy rip-off priced way above the actual cost.
I'm sure all the ethically bankrupt pencil heads that came up with this one just spend their days dreaming up new ways to rip off the public. Time for some action. Vote against your sitting MP of whatever party & let them know why. |
| 32. |
Just got my quote $293.36 from GIO last year cost me $162.05. This is wrong on a grand scale. What can we do except complain on here as no one seems to care? |
| 33. |
what a JOKE 90% of 250cc bikes are trail bikes only ridden off road but by law have to be registerd, if you have a accident the insurance company will wipe your policy anyway because you are off the bitumen, every other state in the country has recreational rego\'s & ctp\'s but not NSW.
One more point worth mentioning if you look at how prices are calculated some one who has been riding for 30 years but rides a 250cc will be hit with a bigger bill than a learner who has NEVER riden but rides a 650cc sports bike.
Some one needs to fix this blatent money grab before there are thousands off bikes out there unregisterd and uninsured. |
| 34. |
The outgoing (!!!) NSW government is to be condemned for anti-motorcyling attitudes. Everyone who can no longer afford to register their motorcycles and scooters, will simply return to cars. This will add to the congestion of our roads and increase pollution
And somebody please explain to me why CTP costs more for my 2,000km/year dirtbike (ridden only offroad), than my 30,000km car (driven mostly on busy Sydney roads).
Every other state is more bike friendly than NSW. I\'ve always been a labour voter, but at the next election I\'m voting purely on this issue. Goodbye and good riddence to the corrupt and completely out-of-touch baffoons that are the NSW government. |
| 35. |
I was about to sell my 500cc bike to downsize to a more affordable 250cc, only to be shocked to find that both bikes incur the same CTP cost. Clearly, 250cc riders are getting strangled for money by the incompetant leadership. How can there be any other explanation for the dramatic price increase for bikes which are "conveniently" above 226cc? LAMS riders can't even carry pillions until they're on their greens! Who's going to 'need' that extra financial coverage? |
| 36. |
Not just 250cc look at increase on 1200's = 100%, My ZRX does 3,500 k's a year if lucky, just a weekend toy Greenslip has doubled NSW time to get out. |
| 37. |
One more comment, what about the MCIS Levy that started life as a so called small insignificant amount have a look at your latest renewal now $213.00 in most cases. How many of us are sick of the never ending spin and BullSh** of NSW. |
| 38. |
just another cash grab by GovCo NSW, with 4 bikes and 1 car in the garage we will pay nearly $2300 in greenslips this year, the cheapest is by far the car, why?, I\'m sure I could do a bucket load more damage to others with the car if something were to go pearshaped than I ever could on a bike!!!!! |
| 39. |
Seriously, Just what were they thinking when putting the price nearly 100% more. Do they want motorbikes off the road and more cars to congest roads. Seriously they need to replace those financial incompetent fools in the office for doing this without any justification. |
| 40. |
Dear MAA, why have the CTP's gone up so much and so quickly?
My partners 250 bikes went up from $181 to $357 overnight and they are LAMS Approved Motorcycles. Why does her 250 LAMS bike cost more than a car to register and she cannot carry a pillion? Why does my 1000cc bike cost more than a 2.2 tonne Nissan Patrol?
|
| 41. |
I am lost for words. The green slip for my 250cc bike now costs more than my car. I also have a larger bike and the green slip is nudging $600 bucks. This country is going down hill fast. The fun police stop you doing anything. Might as well sit at home and eat fast food and have a heart attack. |
| 42. |
The whole purpose of insurance is to spread the risk across a large group - this new grouping is plainly stupid. I can not see why in WA it costs $300 odd to register / insure your bike yet in NSW it is 600 plus.
|
| 43. |
Yet again they are trying to penalise us for "doing the right thing". A rider who buys a small or LAMS bike uses less fuel, travels more slowly and has far less risk of serious injury. Yet, with all these factors, those owners are tentatively being punished for going the safer, more green route. The Beaurocrats need to be more farsighted, see the bigger picture and offer positive incentives to downsizing if Sydney's traffic situation is to not fall into total disarray.
|
| 44. |
After seeing the response Kenneally gave to the question of the price hike, I hold little or no hope of ever seeing common sense or fairness in the pricing of ctp.
Some comments in her response also raises the question does she even know what ctp is for! Good luck riders, but my helmet will be dusty for a long time. |
| 45. |
i ride a 2009 250. my greenslip went from $264 up to $462.. i cant understand why insurance to cover personal injury which i cause in an accident should go up when statistics show more bike accidents are single vehicle accidents where the rider is the only person hurt and the bike is the only property damaged... where is the data |
| 46. |
Just got my renewal notice today. What a cop out this is!, I have riding for 45 years (mostly 250cc) and this is the biggest rip off by far in my time with bikes. Who ever dreamed this up and the supporters should now be in jail, and for good measure throw the key away so they cannot do any more harm to society. |
| 47. |
I have a 250 cc TTR and due for rego November. Got the CTP with NRMA and is $280. went on liine for a quote in QLD and CTP is $78. Am going to register my bike in QLD and also vote out NSW Labor ! |
| 48. |
My green slip for my 250 costs the same as my truck. what bullshit this is carbon tax what puts out more gas truck or bike. The goverment should incourage more bikes to reduce cabon effects. I cummute to work every day on my 250 and love to watch dickheads stuck in traffic choking in there own fumes. Bikes arent dangerous its people in cars that kill motorcyclist when there looking at GPS , talking on phones, or driving under the influnece of medications. Labour goverments need to go to many pricks that love arses and lips state goverments are just pricks with ears. There needs to be a rethink on insurances and green slips absolute robbery. |
